Megan Easterling is a Capricorn who smiles when she can. We spoke about her themes and the creative process.
What terms would you use to describe your art style?
Contemporary, pop art, expressionist.
What is it like to be an artist in Durham?
It’s amazing. There’s a lot of support in Durham for artists.
Are there important themes or tendencies you include or notice in your work?
I try to include themes of everyday life, and also struggles; whether they be oppression or dealing with mental health.
What is your source of constant inspiration?
Experiencing and interpreting life.
What are your preferred media and why?
Currently digital or acrylic paint, but I’m a sculptor at heart so, also clay.
Is there a certain ritual you follow when inspired to create something new?
I start by researching the topics I want to discuss in my work, and then I sketch out thumbnail ideas using references.
Inspiration behind your Art Ain’t Innocent public art project?
Blackness, like other marginalized groups is sometimes equated to “otherness”. I wanted to depict representation of all forms of blackness when talking about black lives because blackness to me is not exclusive to the African diaspora. The way the figure is posed is meant to suggest a level of discomfort between it and the flag.
Where do you see yourself in five (5) years?
I am a teaching artist. I see myself continuing to spread my knowledge of art to other young creatives.
How can we buy your art?
Send me an email or through Instagram where I host my digital as well as traditional art.
