Triangle based artist and New Yorker Clarence Heyward connects with us through his deeply personal art and perspectives:

How did you get started painting?

When I was two years old, my mother and I would color in coloring books. That was the beginning of my journey as a painter. Although my practice has evolved since, I'm still that kid playing with colors.

What motivates you?

Leaving a Legacy. My wife, my children, and my community motivate me. I have a strong sense of responsibility in using the gift that God has given me.

How do you choose your subjects?

My subjects are predominately myself and my family and friends. Usually I have some form of a relationship with my subjects.

How has your life experience influenced your work?

Most of my paintings contain narratives based on my life experiences. Whether it be a first hand account or something that has impacted me in some way. My art practice is a way to process and explore the world in which I live.

Your paintings often have stark backgrounds that have a way of depicting your subjects suspended in blank space, what is the intention here?

With my portraiture I often use the “gaze” to create a dialogue with the viewer. I challenge myself to create complex, yet simple compositions that do not interfere with this conversation. A lot of thought and research goes into the “blank space” behind the subjects.

What do you miss about NYC? What do you wish to forget?

I miss the NYC of the 90’s and early 2000’s. I miss being enveloped in a melting pot of culture. I miss the accessibility that living in a big city affords. There isn’t anything that I'd wish to forget, growing up in NYC made me who I am today.

What do you appreciate about Durham?

I appreciate the pride that people from Durham have. I appreciate the rich history as it pertains to Black culture and history there. I love the sense of community that you feel when you are in Durham.
