Mariana McAnuff
Muse
Capturing the essential elements of a person while portraying an authentic vision can be part of what makes a portrait so special. We chat with local muse Mariana McAnuff on how she inspires, and what it’s like to be the subject of an attentive artist’s gaze.
What does a muse contribute to a creative medium?
I think a muse is inspiration. For photography, it’s a visual invite you get to enter into a mental room of ideas.
How was working with Kennedi Carter?
Working with Kennedi was a peek into a creative mind.
I walked into the shoot really not knowing what to expect. As each layer of clothing was applied, then the hair, I started to see the vision. Kennedi was patient and made me feel powerful and beautiful as she took each photo. I could tell she wanted her pictures to say something that had not already be said or seen. To provoke a new concept or idea.
At first I had difficulty even seeing myself in a better way- a way I was told I could not be seen, but I could tell she wanted to change that idea with her exhibit. I was excited to see the end result and honored to be a part of it.
What do you like to create?
I love to paint. I love color!
I haven’t been able to put as much time in lately as I would like to, but when I do, it definitely calms my soul.
What would you say to your younger self?
I would tell my younger self to love yourself, celebrate your individual beauty, and your brown skin is beautiful.
