We caught up with Raleigh’s mayoral candidate Dr. Terrance Ruth. His answers might surprise you. Also, don’t leave without listening to this additional Buddy Ruski Show interview below:

How does fatherhood affect your decision making today?

My son is 7 years old and the decisions that are made right now by the council will directly impact him and his family in the future. I want my son to enjoy an inclusive, diverse, and strong city. Right now we are on the wrong track and we need to think about the long term effects with a high level of urgency. It is through my son that I realize how much is at stake right now. I want my son to see me leading during a time that demands bold leadership and wise choices. I want my son to be able to buy a house. I want my son to be able to find a job. I want my son to live in a diverse city. I want my son to stay in Raleigh and I want Raleigh to be a place where he would want to live.

Please describe a politician in one word?

Accountable.

Young adults often feel like their voices are not represented in public service. Will you involve Raleigh's youth in your administration?

I am empowering young adults right now. My campaign is following the leadership of young adults, especially in the community listening session. We are actively asking young adults what they value from the city and how we can support their dreams for the future of the city. We have several major universities and colleges in the city and the city is there to support the thousands of students they enroll each semester. We have one of the largest districts in the state and country and our goal as a city should be to keep that talent here.  The best way to keep talent in Raleigh is to listen to them right now while they are still in school and early in their careers.

What is your favorite book?

I have several favorite books but the book that is taking much of my attention right now is The New Localism: How Cities Can Thrive in the Age of Populism by Bruce J. Katz.

When was the last time you saw a drag show?

Cover Girl! Put the bass in your walk, head to toe let your whole body talk…. Does Rupaul Drag Race count? - One of my wife's favorite shows.
